2016 Texas AP Broadcasters Radio & TV Contests

It’s time for the annual Texas Associated Press Broadcasters radio & television contests. Spanish entries are welcome. You must be an AP member to enter. The deadline to enter is Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at 11 p.m. (central time). All entries must have aired or been posted online during 2015. All entries must be the on-air version or the online version. An entry cannot be a re-creation. The competition is entirely online.

  • Scroll down to: 2016 Texas AP Broadcasters, click on link, then click on “Log Into The Contest” and then to “Select a Contest” – scroll to 2016 Texas AP Broadcasters and click on that link

  • Then your generic password for the first login is: bnc
  • You can then change the password for your specific station

Promoting your TAPB awards

Each year the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (“TAPB”) recognizes excellence and achievement in journalism with awards in various categories.

Your promotion must state the “Texas Associated Press Broadcasters” (NOT Associated Press) as the award’s source.

— Promotional use of the word “Best” will apply only to first-place winners.

Any use of a reference to a TAPB award that in any way misleads the public about a TAPB award, including but not limited to distorted or exaggerated claims, is strictly prohibited.

Violations of either the spirit or intent of this prohibition may result in the disqualification of the offending entity from TAPB contests for a one-year period.

TAPB board reserves all rights to determine the truthfulness of any promotion that uses a reference to TAPB awards. The TAPB will be the sole determiner of whether or not a violation has occurred.

— 801 total entries (627 TV & 174 radio), from 43 stations (33 TV & 10 radio). Total entry fees paid: $34,360.
— PROPOSED new TV & radio category: Sports Anchor or Anchor Team: (3 entries per station). (Rules would be similar to News Anchor or Anchor Team category): Time limit is 10 minutes. Must feature compiled sports reports from an individual anchor or anchor team. Entry should include examples of ability to ad-lib around breaking sports events, as well as to handle regular sports reports, features, etc. This is a compilation of work that does not have to be submitted from work performed on a contest day.
— PROPOSED new TV & radio category: Sports Special (3 entries per station). Must air outside a regularly scheduled sportscast. Time limit TBD.
— Proposed new TV category: Commentary-Editorial (3 entries per station) _ (NOTE: Proposal to reinstate this TV category, which was dropped several years ago due to lack of entries. Rules would be similar to current radio category). Commentary by TV station personnel regarding significant community issues. Originated by a local station. NOTE: This category will have just one winner, with combined judging of Divisions 1-2-3-4.

4. TAPB banquet program:
— Board members approved banquet program with same basic format as 2013 TAPB convention. Chairman Benji Snead will be the emcee. Other board members will help hand out awards, plaques as needed. Cash bar/happy hour begins 6 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the Headliners Club in Austin. Banquet begins at 7 p.m. Open seating, same as in previous years.

3. TAPB Bills: Board approved payment of following bills:
_ Noble Sprayberry, webmaster, $50 for March.
_ Level 3 Communications/January conference call: $13.20
_ AP’s Diana Heidgerd: $91.65 ($74.81 from Jason’s Deli/board lunch, plus $16.84 from Target, water, snacks). NOTE: Diana will also have four bills from the Marriott SpringHill Suites in Addison, for board members Benji Snead, Jenny Martinez, Triston Sanders and Jack Williams, night of March first at $98 rate, plus tax. Approved but pending.
_ Texas Association of Broadcasters $500, to support March 8 TAB radio/TV seminar in Lubbock, Texas.

4. FINANCES: Board approved following payments/or pending payments required prior to April 12, 2014, TAPB convention at the Headliners Club in Austin:
_ $10,000 in TAPB scholarships (see below).
_ $1,000 to Headliners Foundation scholarship
_ American Express gift cards for the 21 TAPB contest judges (at $50 each, plus about $4 per card activation fee). Board also approved purchasing six Amex gift cards at $100 apiece, a part of the same purchase, as the annual thank-you gifts from the group to board members for serving. Board member gift cards will be presented during the April 12, 2014, TAPB banquet. Diana will pay and submit for reimbursement.
_ Convention photographer: $300
_ Petty cash/convention change & bar: $500.
_ Bar/ticket person: $75
_ Best of Show convention winners’ reel producer: $300.

5. SCHOLARSHIP
_ The TAPB board voted to award a total of $10,000 in scholarships, with one student receiving $6,000 and another getting $4,000. Names of the winners will be announced in a story on the AP wire once the students have been contacted by TAPB Chairman Benji Snead.

6. FOIFT WINNER:
_ The TAPB board selected a Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas award winner, based on entries submitted online. The winner will be announced during the April 12 convention banquet.

7. CONVENTION: April 12, 2014, at the Headliners Club in Austin:
_ Board set banquet registration cost at $50 per person.
_ The meal will include pan-fried almond crusted chicken at $27.95 per person, plus wedge salad and gourmet mousse for dessert ($7.95 dessert). Total approximately $36, but does not include taxes, gratuity, etc.

8. Other business?
_ Next TAPB conference call will be Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at 10:45 a.m. CST.
Board members will set the agenda for the TAPB business session the afternoon of Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the Headliners Club in Austin. Suggestions for contest changes will be discussed, also board members would like Barry Bedlan to provide an update on the TAPB tax ID situation and provide copies of the updated bylaws.
