2016 Texas AP Broadcasters Radio & TV Contests

It’s time for the annual Texas Associated Press Broadcasters radio & television contests. Spanish entries are welcome. You must be an AP member to enter. The deadline to enter is Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at 11 p.m. (central time). All entries must have aired or been posted online during 2015. All entries must be the on-air version or the online version. An entry cannot be a re-creation. The competition is entirely online.

  • Go to: “Find Contests”
  • Scroll down to: 2016 Texas AP Broadcasters, click on link, then click on “Log Into The Contest” and then to “Select a Contest” – scroll to 2016 Texas AP Broadcasters and click on that link
  • Then go to “Select Media Organization” and find your station call letters
  • Then your generic password for the first login is: bnc
  • You can then change the password for your specific station

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you were your station’s contest coordinator last year, please use your same password. Promoting your TAPB awards

Each year the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (“TAPB”) recognizes excellence and achievement in journalism with awards in various categories.

Your promotion must state the “Texas Associated Press Broadcasters” (NOT Associated Press) as the award’s source.

— Promotional use of the word “Best” will apply only to first-place winners.

Any use of a reference to a TAPB award that in any way misleads the public about a TAPB award, including but not limited to distorted or exaggerated claims, is strictly prohibited.

Violations of either the spirit or intent of this prohibition may result in the disqualification of the offending entity from TAPB contests for a one-year period.

TAPB board reserves all rights to determine the truthfulness of any promotion that uses a reference to TAPB awards. The TAPB will be the sole determiner of whether or not a violation has occurred.

1. Webmaster Noble Sprayberry offered suggestions on improving www.tapb.org, which has not been updated for 6-7 years.
— Board members approved paying Noble a flat $500 to make the upgrades.
— Noble suggested an updated TAPB logo. Triston Sanders offered to contact her mother, who is a graphic artist, to help.

2. TAPB Balance: $23,964.79.

3. BILLS to be paid:
— Board approved $50 for August regular payment to webmaster Noble Sprayberry.
— Board approved $1,000 deposit for the Headliners Club in Austin, down payment for next year’s TAPB convention — on Saturday, April 25, 2015.

4. Texas AP’s Barry Bedlan is still working on getting a federal tax ID number for TAPB. He’ll update the board more during the September conference call.

5. No other business. Next TAPB conference call will be Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at 10:45 a.m. CDT.

_ Noble Sprayberry, $50 for June webmaster fee (we went ahead and sent him the May $50 because you did not hold a conference call last month and this is a recurring cost)
_ AP’s Diana Heidgerd, $87.66 for shipping costs & stamps, mailing of awards not picked up after the April 12 convention.

_ Last year TAPB donated $500. Please note TAPB already donated $500 to TAB for the March seminar that was held in Lubbock. Board voted to donate $500 for the Sept. 20 seminar. “Save the Date” advisories are moving on the AP wire.

_ NEW CATEGORY APPROVED: Board unanimously approved adding a Sports Anchor or Anchor Team category to both the TV and Radio contests, but agreed to work out the language of the category’s rules at a later date.
_ NEW TV CATEGORY APPROVED: Board unanimously approved adding a Sports Special category for TV only with the following rules language: “Sports Special: Any extended coverage beyond a routine sportscast. It may fall within a scheduled newscast.”
_ TV CATEGORY REINSTATED: Board unanimously approved reinstating the Commentary-Editorial category for TV. The rules language was approved as proposed: “Commentary by TV station personnel regarding significant community issues. Originated by a local station. NOTE: This category will have just one winner across all four TV divisions.”)
