Each year the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (“TAPB”) recognizes excellence and achievement in journalism with awards in various categories.

Your promotion must state the “Texas Associated Press Broadcasters” (NOT Associated Press) as the award’s source.

— Promotional use of the word “Best” will apply only to first-place winners.

Any use of a reference to a TAPB award that in any way misleads the public about a TAPB award, including but not limited to distorted or exaggerated claims, is strictly prohibited.

Violations of either the spirit or intent of this prohibition may result in the disqualification of the offending entity from TAPB contests for a one-year period.

TAPB board reserves all rights to determine the truthfulness of any promotion that uses a reference to TAPB awards. The TAPB will be the sole determiner of whether or not a violation has occurred.

— RADIO VICE PRESIDENT: Jack Williams, KUHF, Houston
— and Dallas AP’s Barry Bedlan and Diana Heidgerd
…………..

NOTE: TAPB Chairman Benji Snead announced he has resigned as news director at KCBD-TV in Lubbock, effective Feb. 1, 2015, to take a media job in the private sector. …………….

1. TAPB balance: $22,104.66.

2. BILLS to be paid: Board approved payment of following bills:
— December webmaster fee to Noble Sprayberry: $50
— Level 3 Communications, for November conference call: $19.09
— AP’s Diana Heidgerd, $44 for renewal of hosting site for www.tapb.org (will submit receipt)
— Contest host Betterbnc.com.: $825. Barry Bedlan says the cost includes $22 still owed from last year’s contest. TAPB had paid to cover 781 entries, which apparently was comparable to a previous total, but ended up with 803 entries. Barry has the betterbnc.com contract.

3. PAYPAL & TAPB CONTEST FEES:
— Board approved contract with PayPal for radio/TV stations to pay for their TAPB contest entry fees. PayPal will be added to the current method of payment (personal/corporate checks still accepted). Bedlan says the PayPal costs will be 30 cents per transaction, plus about 3 percent of the amount being paid. Bedlan says a number of other AP states already used PayPal for their contests.
— Board members, amid the higher costs associated with PayPal and for other anticipated administrative costs, approved raising all contest entry fees by $5 (radio & TV). Radio fees will be $40 per large-market entry and $30 per smaller-market entry. TV fees will be $65 per entry for Division 1 (largest market), $55 per entry for Division 2, $50 for Division 3 and then $40 for Division 4.

4. CONTEST COORDINATOR/CYNDY MOORE:
— The board approved increasing the hourly fee for Cyndy Moore from $20 last year, to $25.
Board noted Cyndy (contract pending) will be responsible for much more administrative/clerical duties related to the TAPB contest & convention, including online coordination/registration of judges, setting up betterbnc.com with categories, doing all convention registration online (via PayPal), coordinating online payment of all funds (PayPal will send the money directly to the TAPB bank account). Cyndy will also be asked to handle more administrative duties such as putting together the banquet program, and making sure the Texas AP Broadcasters top contest winners, in certain affiliated Headliners’ categories, are forwarded to Headliners competition. Diana Heidgerd will still be the main contact for the contest/convention, Cyndy will just be taking over more of the clerical duties.

Sept. 26, 2014 Board Actions

Here is a review of the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters conference call on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, with:

_ CHAIRMAN: Benji Snead, KCBD-TV, Lubbock

_ TV PRESIDENT: Triston Sanders, KENS, San Antonio

_ RADIO PRESIDENT: Matt Thomas, KRLD, Dallas

_ RADIO VICE PRESIDENT: Jack Williams, KUHF, Houston.

_ and Dallas AP’s Barry Bedlan & 3807 Tarawood Court

      …………………………………………

   1. TAPB Balance: $22,414.79.

   2. BILLS to be paid/approved by board:

_ Noble Sprayberry, $50 webmaster fee for September

_ Level 3 Communications, $30.59 for August conference call

   3. WEBSITE discussion.

_ Efforts continue to update www.tapb.org  Board chairman Benji Snead will be the point person with webmaster Noble Sprayberry. Noble has mentioned updating the site to include the latest version of the AP logo. Triston Sanders’ mother, who is a graphic artist, continues to provide possible updated logos, etc. More discussion during the next TAPB conference call.

   4. Headliners Foundation: Sept. 13 luncheon in Austin & Southwest Broadcast Newsroom Workshop: Sept. 20 daylong event at the University of Texas in Austin.

_ KRLD Radio Assistant News Director Matt Thomas (TAPB radio president) attended the Headliners luncheon.

_ AP’s Diana Heidgerd attended the seminar, reports about 180 people attended.

   5. JUDGES: Board agreed to email judges from last year’s TAPB competition to see if they might be available for judging again/radio/TV/online.

DATES TO REMEMBER: NOTE: 2015 sweeps are Jan. 29-Feb. 25.

_ Judging to start any time Saturday, Feb. 28 through midnight (central time) Monday, March 9.

_ TAPB board will meet at the Dallas AP office on Saturday, March 14, to review results, pick scholarship winners, choose FOIFT winner.

_ TAPB convention/awards banquet will be Saturday, April 25, 2015, at the Headliners Club in Austin (same place as last year).

   6. TAPB CONTEST RULES/payment

_ Board endorsed the idea of using PayPal. Cost would be approximately 2.9 percent per transaction, plus 30 cents. The cost is taken off the TOTAL paid, not added to the basic entry fee. For example, if a radio or TV station paid $50 for an entry, the cost to the AP member would be: $50. The transaction fee would be taken out of that amount. So TAPB would receive slightly more than $48 for the transactions. NOTE: People entering the contest would not be required to use PayPal, it would be an option for people whose only method of payment would be via credit card. Stations/individuals would still be allowed to pay with corporate/personal checks. AP’s Barry Bedlan says PayPal could also be used to pay for registration for the April 25, 2015, convention registration fee (again, other forms of payment would still be accepted).

_ Board members will decide on PayPal measure and cost of entry fees during their next conference call.

_ Bedlan says he’s still looking into securing a tax ID for the group, but PayPal might be a payment substitute.

   7. Other business: None.

   _ Next conference call Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at 10:45 a.m. CDT.
