Promoting your TAPB awards

Each year the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (“TAPB”) recognizes excellence and achievement in journalism with awards in various categories. Your promotion must state the “Texas Associated Press Broadcasters” (NOT Associated Press) as the award’s source. — Promotional use of the word “Best” will apply only to first-place winners. Any use of a reference to a TAPB award that in any way misleads the public about a TAPB award, including but not limited to distorted or exaggerated claims, is strictly prohibited. Violations of either the spirit or intent of this prohibition may result in the disqualification of the offending entity from TAPB contests for a one-year period. TAPB board reserves all rights to determine the truthfulness of any promotion that uses a reference to TAPB awards. The TAPB will be the sole determiner of whether or not a violation has occurred.

_ VICE CHAIRMAN: Matt Thomas, KRLD Radio, Dallas

_ TV PRESIDENT: Jack Acosta, KENS, San Antonio

_ TV VICE PRESIDENT: Michael O’Neill, KHOU, Houston

_ RADIO PRESIDENT: Jack Williams, KUHF, Houston

_ and Dallas AP’s Diana Heidgerd

……………

  1. TAPB Balance:

n  $59,184.08. Includes approximately $1,800 in PayPal payments for April 9 TAPB awards banquet in Austin.

  1. BILLS to be paid: Board approved payment of following bills:

n  Noble Sprayberry, webmaster, $300 for website maintenance for six months, through September (NOTE: Noble is usually paid $50 per month, but Texas AP Bureau Chief Dale Leach – who signs the TAPB checks — will be retiring in a few weeks, and chairwoman Jenny Martinez is leaving the TAPB board – and she also needs to co-sign checks over $50). Board decided to pay Noble six months in advance to make sure no missed payments in between. AP administrators will decide who will next be signing TAPB checks.

n  Alexa Haik, TAPB contest coordinator: $72.47.

n  Diana Heidgerd, $770.30 (on her personal credit card) to pay for the 2nd place certificates. Done by Print Abilities (former Grubbs Graphics).

n  Diana Heidgerd, $27.06 (on her personal credit card) to pay for engraving (done in Dallas by Artistic Awards) of the two big awards, Jordan-Flaherty trophy & the FOIFT big plaque.

n  KXAN-TV, $150 refund for overpayment for April 9 banquet.

n  www.tapb.org  renewal of domain name. Diana paid $30.39 (on personal credit card), so good through June 1, 2017.

  1. PROPOSED TAPB CONTEST CHANGE:

n  Diana updated the TAPB board on possible upcoming changes, starting with the 2016-2017 contest, AP efforts to streamline operations/administration of radio/TV and newspaper contests and use paid contest coordinators. The goal is to transfer contest-related duties and board administration responsibilities to paid contest coordinators, broadening the efforts already begun by TAPB this year with coordinator Alexa Haik. This will ensure that contests and events continue to recognize outstanding reporting in the region.  Most AP state contests would have similar contest categories (very similar to what TAPB currently has for categories),  with some specialty categories (such as the TAPB/Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas Award). Details are being worked out, but it could mean the four-division TV competition in Texas would become a three-division competition, better competitive options for all AP members.
